With over 30 years experience in Judo, Stephen has competed at the highest level across the Globe. After becoming British Champion at the age of fifteen, Stephen represented GB to win a Gold medal and became Britain's only World School's Champion in that year. 
 
He continued to win multiple titles competing around the world, some of which are listed below.  Stephen found great pride in representing his club, Northern Ireland, Ireland and Great Britain.  
 
For Stephen, Judo is not only a medium through which one can learn a diverse Olympic sport, but also a way to build confidence, discipline and self-respect.
 
He currently holds a BJA level 2 Club Coach Award, as well as a UKCC Level 2 coaching qualification. He is a 3rd Dan Black belt and working towards his 4th Dan.
 
Whilst also being ranked 2nd in Britain at age 19, Stephen represented Ireland at Junior European level and was 7th in that European C'ships. Stephen also acheived the following;
 
 
  • Multiple Northern Ireland champion
  • Multiple All Ireland title
  • 2 x British Schools titles
  • 1 x World Schools title
  • 4 x Irish Inter varsity titles
  • 3 x British University titles
  • 4 x British C'ship bronze medals
  • 1 x Canadian National Exhibition Champion
  • 1 x Welsh Senior Open title

Anne Marie McCluskey - 1st Dan

Where:  Lagan Valley Academy, Ballymacrickett Academy, Pond Park Academy, Park Lodge Academy, Pond Park Academy, Trinity Academy & St Bernard's Academy!


'I started Judo relatively late in life, 10 years ago.  I enjoy the challenge of this diverse,very technical and exciting sport'.
 
Anne Marie is the Business Manager, Club Treasurer as well as one of the Senior Coaches (qualified - Level 2).  She devotes her time to the operational, administrational and logistical requirements of running multiple schools and clubs.  Anne Marie is also one of the DCPO's for the club. 
 
'I believe that Judo is not only a great way to meet new people, learn a new skill but it is a fun way to gain fitness'.  It is never too late to start this diverse sport as many great players and coaches before her have found!  

Anne Marie came second in the BJA's 'Coach of the Year' which took in the whole of the UK!
 
  
 
Trainee Junior Coach
Grace McCluskey - 1st Kyu
 
Where:  Lagan Valley Academy & Ballymacrickett Academy

Former Northern Ireland Champion, Grace is currently a Brown Belt and working towards Black Belt. Grace is known for her lightning Uchi Komi and 'big' throwing techniques!!  Her favourite techniques are O Goshi (major hip throw), O Uchi Gari (major inner reap) and Kami Shiho Gatame (upper four quarters hold)."

Grace has competed and won medals in numerous festivals, events and competitions.  Grace is also a trained competition table official/scorer and regularly officiates at Club judo events.
 

 
 
Coach (Level 1) / DCPO / Welfare Officer
David Kerr - 1st Dan
 
Where:  Lagan Valley Academy

Davy started out his Judo journey as a spectator! Watching his young daughter Serena and son Aidan progress through the grades.  Having moved through his grades, he is now a Black Belt, Level 1 Coach and the Club Welfare Officer.  Always the one to bring fun and light heartedness to the mat.




Coach (Level 1)  
Robert McCusker - 1st Dan

Where:  Lagan Valley Academy

Robert has been doing Judo for many years, having already a strong martial arts background with a Black Belt in Taekwondo and Blue Belt Jujitsu.  Robert is also a qualified Tae Bo Instructor. Having enjoyed competing, Robert has gained medals in the Commonwealth Tournament, NI Championships & Irish Open! Robert is the Coach that quickly observes if someone needs help!

 


Senior Coach (EJU Level 5)
Zane Lightfoot - 5th Dan

Where: Lagan Valley Academy & Ballymacrickett Academy

Zane has been involved in Judo for over 30 years having run his own Judo school.  Originally from New Zealand, Zane has trained in Japan and competed around the world.  Zane works with the Advanced, Competitive, Teen & Adult players to 'tweek' and improve their game. Zane has a great technical Judo brain and passion for Judo!




Coach (Level 1)
Patrick Toal - 1st Dan

Where: Lagan Valley Academy

Patrick started his Judo as a child and went on to compete and win medals around the world.  At the age of 17 he left the sport as 1st Kyu and returned to attain his Black Belt.  Patrick has since brought his family to The Judo Academy and become a Coach. With Patrick's excellent technical knowledge, he is an invaluable member of the Coaching team, working in with the Competitve and Adult sections of the Club!
